DJ Ivy's Fourth of July Mix, Vol. 1: Parlour Jams!
Last month, I learned about DJ Ivy and, thanks to her My Little Pony tattoo, I was smitten. The Midwest girl, who lives in Los Angeles, gave us a Fourth of July treat for our American readers. Ohlesdoit!Born and raised?Cleveland, OhioHow did you start spinning?I always had DJ friends during high school and was fascinated by music in general but was too scared to try it. After six years of spectating, I began experimenting with a friend while living in New York. Then I started practicing with another DJ friend and he invited me to Brooklyn to open for him on my 21st birthday. I was stoked, bought a bunch of club records and landed a residency with him. I bought my first set of turntables shortly after, I still have the same pair and I'm turning 30 this year!Favorite song to play at the height of the party?Anything ratchet at the moment, like "Ratchet Girl Anthem" followed by "I Do It For The Ratchets."What did you want to be when you were little?First, an artist because I loved music, dance and drawing. Then I became obsessed with my Fisher Price cash register with scanner and I wanted to be a cashier because I really liked to press buttons. It's ironic, I still do all of those things.Who are you DJ idols?Pete Rock, Premier, Jazzy Jeff, A-Trak, Craze, Q-Bert, Z-Trip, Shadow, Mix Master Mike, DJ Muggs, DJ AM (R.I.P.) and DJ Shortee. All of these DJs have made an impact on my life and career in some way. They are amazingly talented producers, live performance artists and turntablist legends.Who is the most interesting person in the world?The Dos Equis Man.What’s your favorite country to visit?Australia, I could definitely move there!What’s your favorite saying?"Fashion fades but style is eternal" - Yves St. LaurentWhat piece of clothing do you wear everyday, barring undies?I always wear a gold chain of some sort.What’s the last thing you bought to wear?An $11 pair of Target floral sunglasses.Favorite guilty pleasure?Soft pretzels with nacho cheese, anything by Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera and ABC's "Duets."Favorite movie?True RomanceFive favorite songs?SBJKT's "Wildfire" ft.
